Marquez: I won all four fights with Pacquiao – why another fight?
By Chris Williams: After four fights with Manny Pacquiao, Mexican superstar Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) doesn t see the point of getting back inside the ring with the 36-year-old Filipino again.
The reason why is because Marquez feels he beat Pacquiao in all four fights, but was robbed in the first three of them before finally making up his mind that he wasn t going to let the judges play a part in his fourth fight in 2012.
That was when Marquez knocked Pacquiao out cold in the 6th round. That was a vicious knockout that left Pacquiao face down on the canvas for close to two minutes. Pacquiao was revived and thankfully he was okay afterwards. But for Marquez, he feels like he closed out the series with that final knockout, because it was the equivalent of an exclamation point.
Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr are currently trying to negotiate a fight, but if that fight doesn t take place next, you can bet that Marquez s name will come up as one of the guys that Pacquiao s promoter will be hoping to match with him.
The last three fights with Manny [Prior to his knockout of Manny in 2012], I won the fights, cbs sportsline Marquez said via Thaboxingvoice.com . A lot of people know what happened in those fights. In the first fight, I won a close decision, but [it] was a draw. The second fight, I won another close decision maybe two points, three points. In the third fight, I won very clearly I won the four fights– why another fight?
I thought the first three fights were clear robberies, as Marquez showed that he was the superior fighter in each of them. That s why I was surprised that he wanted to face Pacquiao a fourth time in 2012. It looked like Marquez was asking for trouble in taking yet another fight with Pacquiao, but Marquez was clever to train for a knockout rather than a decision, because cbs sportsline he probably would have had a tough time trying to win a decision even though he showed in the first five rounds that he was the superior fighter.
Pacquiao, his trainer Freddie Roach and promoter Bob Arum all want to see Pacauiao face Marquez in a fifth fight. The thing is if Marquez was to beat Pacquiao in that fight, he d find himself in the same situation as he is now Arum, Pacquiao and Roach all wanting yet another cbs sportsline fight. But if the fight went to the cards, Marquez would likely cbs sportsline have to deal with him losing another controversial decision. Beating Pacquiao is difficult cbs sportsline when it comes to outpointing him because he just seems to get the benefit of the doubt in many of his fights with the exception of his first fight with Tim Bradley.
Marquez hasn t fought since beating Mike Alvarado a year ago in May. He injured his knee in that fight, and he d been taking it easy since. Marquez wants a shot at another world title so he can get a chance to win five division world titles. The guy that Marquez is thinking of possibly fighting is IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook later this year if Brook gets past his March title defense against Jo Jo Dan.
